Am I a night owl or early bird? That is the question for #BlogLikeCrazy. And I think it is a good one for my Grit category this week. I have something I need to get off my chest.
Early Bird Grit
A very long time ago I used to be a night owl. By nature and by preference I would much rather be a night owl. I am a night owl. However, I have had to force myself to be an early bird.
Why? Because I refuse to come up with excuses.
But I need, want, and like to workout too. I have grown accustomed to working out and being healthy or seeking out that healthy lifestyle. If not for physical results then for mental and spiritual results.
And working retail, it means I need to carve out a special time just for working out. I have to go early in the morning or it won’t get done. I refuse to come up with excuses.
My doctor told me many years ago that I should start exercising and he said most people’s excuse was that they could not find time. Truth.
So he said to me, “You know what I do? I have to give something else up and I have chosen to give up television watching.”
I was quite impressed that he shared his own experience, strength, and hope with me instead of lecturing me like most physicians would have done.
And so I asked myself, what can I give up? Sleep was the answer.
Most people these days want the easier, softer way out. They want the quick and instant gratification. They don’t want to have to put in the effort or hard work to get results and they certainly don’t want to have to wait for it either.
So I give up sleep because I refuse to have an excuse as to why I can’t work out.
Some people say they have tried everything. No, you haven’t. Walking around the block a few times twice a week for a month only to go home to reward yourself with a donut is not trying. I know. That was my justification a long time ago too.
“But I don’t have the money to join anything.” But you found the money to do weight-loss surgery or augmentation or you have money to constantly go through the drive-thru? Um yeah, your excuse is void.
“Does your workout place offer daycare?” Um, you don’t put your kids in daycare when go galavanting all over creation with your new man do you? No? I didn’t think so. Excuse denied.
Anyway, I have gone on to say all of that to say that by nature I am a night owl but have trained myself to be an early bird just so I can get my workout in. Sure, I want to look good on the outside just like anyone else but I need/have to feel good and be healthy on the inside as well.
Working out and eating correctly, clean, and healthy is the only real simple answer for me and is the only thing that gives me real long lasting results. I have to be an early bird or it won’t get done.
