Citizen Glam, Chesney Matthews

Happy March! I continue with my new blog series called Citizen Glam. I’ve decided to do this as a monthly installment instead of weekly.

This month, for March, I have asked Chesney Matthews to join us. I met Chesney a little over a year ago when I started my new job/career in retail. She works as a Visual Manager for a well-known department store in Huntsville, Alabama.

Since I’ve known Chesney, I have always wanted to ask her questions about her style and to be honest, she is probably the inspiration for this new series.

Enough from me, let’s hear from Chesney.

Citizen Glam, Federal Fashionista

Introducing a new series on the blog – Citizen Glam. In this series, I will interview stylish people I know. I don’t know how many posts will be in this series and perhaps it will remain open. Right now I have about four people I have in the queue to be interviewed. I hope to be able to build upon this blog series.

First up is Federal Fashionista. The Fashionista and I met just a short while ago when she moved to town with her family. She opened shop immediately at Clinton Row and we have also worked/collaborated on the Local Boutique series on the blog.

Federal Fashionista’s outfit pictures are easily magazine-glossy-ready and definitely something you want to pay attention to on Instagram. If you ever have the chance to meet or work with FF, you will NOT be disappointed. Not only is she one of the most stylish people I know but she is also the kindest and most charming people I know as well.

On with the interview – my first installment of Citizen Glam, please welcome Federal Fashionista.

What is your definition of style? Or how do you define style?
I view style in two ways. There are clothing, shoe, and accessory trends that come and go overtime from which we choose to love or hate. But the more important definition of style and how I apply style to my life is what I wear that make ME feel confident, beautiful, and prepared to face anything when I walk out of the house in the morning!

Describe your personal style.
With my personal style I subscribe to the motto “they made it so someone has to buy it….and that someone is usually me”. There are very few things I will not try at least once. I play with color, patterns, textures and try to balance all of these elements in an outfit to create an eye-catching look. This approach is not for everyone and sometimes I probably over do it but I view it as art and art can sometimes be crazy!

What top 3 items should be in some one’s closet?

  • chambray shirt
  • leopard jacket
  • military style vest
Incorporating one of these three pieces will almost always take an outfit from average to chic! They are easily paired with anything, affordable, and classic!

Where do you get your inspiration?
The usual suspects such as other fashion bloggers’ posts on Pinterest and Instagram but I also try and be unique. I’ll buy what is trending in stores but then work to add my own element of style into the outfit pairing! Oh, and the J.Crew catalog is always a welcome style inspiration!

Who were your style icons growing up?
I was never into high fashion runway models as a child. Growing up in the 80’s / 90’s I probably just tried to dress like Madonna and Cindy Lauper all the time!

Your favorite place to shop?
I have too many to pick one! J.Crew, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, Old Navy, F21, H&M, Charlotte Russe. If I cant find it there I won’t find it anywhere!

Is there something you would not mind spending a lot of money on? If so, what?
I am very budget conscious so I try to always wait for my item to go on sale before I purchase. There are a few apps now that help me in this endeavor making it easier to save money! But if there was something I would splurge on it would be a pair of designer shoes or anything Burberry!!

What is your advice to someone trying to find their personal style?
I tell my clients to spend a week observing the world around them. What outfits makes you turn your head and do a double take? What makes you cringe? What do you do for a living? What are your shopping habits and budget? All of these factors play a role in how you develop your ‘happy place’ wardrobe. I dont reccomend buying what’s ‘in-style” at the reatil stores if it doesn’t work for the look you are trying to achieve! I think 2016 is the year of anything goes! Make it your year!

Tell us about the first time you knew you had the style bug?
Well, I thought it was after I had my second child 4 years ago and needed an entirely new professional wardrobe to fit my changing body but then my mother told me ‘you have always been like this’. With that said, I still truly enjoy playing dress up every day and helping others with their wardrobe dilemmas!!

How has your style changed or developed over time?
When I entered the ‘professional’ working-world 15 years ago I wore matching 2 piece suits (and only suits) every day. I think women today can just as easily look incredibly professional and work appropriate while also being stylish though the pairing of fun separates or with a great dress. That was the most drastic change I can recall undergoing in my daily wardrobe.

Do you have a favorite designer? If so, who? Why?
Not that I own any pieces, but I love Balmain! This designer embodies all of the elements I love such as beads, lace, fringe, sequins, rhinestones, color and sexiness! Definitely one of my favorites!
