Yep, I bought one. It was a total impulse purchase. I bought a selfie self-help book. Let me explain. I stopped by Barnes & Noble the other day. I had some time to kill. Eventually I found myself in the arts, decor, and style section. When the next thing I know, I have this book in my hand, thumbing through the pages and thinking, “huh, this is rather quite interesting.“
A Selfie Self-Help Book
So, I bought a selfie self-help book. Its real and official title is…. Take Your Selfie Seriously – The Advanced Selfie and Self-Portrait Handbook by Sorelle Amore.
It is a small book; in size and length at just under 140 pages. I have only read one chapter so far but I can tell this will be helpful in many ways. I love it when I read a non-fiction book and it affirms things I’ve thought about myself.
I realize a lot of people think that taking selfies is a narcissistic sickness and maybe there really is something to that, I am not a psychiatrist though. But in this book, it is called the advanced selfie. And it is a full-on art form.
Think about this, we create things to leave behind. Podcasts, blogs, books, paintings, our own offspring! We do this with our own images too; self portraits. It really isn’t anything new. Robert Cornelius started it back in 1839! Let’s not even go back into the parietal art of the ancient world.
We’ve come a long way baby!
This compact book looks like it will be fun and full of good and interesting helpful things. As I stated before I have only read the first chapter and already I am validated in some of the things I have been experiencing.
Take wig-wearing for example. When I wear my wigs, it allows me to NOT worry about my crappy thin balding hair and how can I hide all the bald spots. (Of course I have since shaved off all my hair but it was something I fretted over constantly) That was kind of stressful. I never felt beautiful. But now, when I wear a wig, my mind no longer feels the need to worry about that particular aspect of my physical-being and it frees it up for other things; good things and thoughts have come in to replace those negatives.
And the same can be said with learning how to take our self-portraits. We already do it to a certain extent. What is our best side? What colors do we look best in? Short hair, long hair, curly hair? Dresses, skinny jeans, tank tops, sweatshirts? What do we look best in? What brings out our best features?
Now, let’s play around a little with taking images of ourselves. Let’s try new poses, interesting poses, with props, costumes, avant-garde makeup or regular makeup or no makeup. We will definitely learn new things about ourselves and also appreciate more of what we had all along!
It is what I am planning on doing; self-exploratory in front of the camera.
Definition of self-exploration
: the examination and analysis of one’s own unrealized spiritual or intellectual capacities
So yeah, that is what I will be doing.
