The Rom-Com Lip

What’s the Beauty Trend for 2025? Say Hello (Again) to the Rom-Com Lip.

Spoiler alert: It’s not new. The Rom-Com Lip is back, proving once again that beauty trends are just old tricks with fresh buzzwords. In the past, it was “pouty lips” or “blurred lips.” Now? Slap a quirky, nostalgic name on it, and voilà—suddenly, it’s trendy again.

We love the Dior Lip Oil as much as the next person, but glossy, syrupy lips are finally facing some decent competition as rom-com lips or movie lips make a stunning case for soft, semimatte textures. In fact, the trend looks set to go stratospheric in 2025.

Makeup artist Tanielle Jai (who has heavily influenced such viral aesthetics as the latte makeup look) tells Glamour that kissable lips will be the one to watch, with semimatte balms now in contention for the win in 2025, given the romantic (and forgiving) finish they can create.

“I think we’ll be seeing less emphasis on defined lip liner and more of that ‘bitten lip’ look inspired by Korean and French beauty trends,” she says. “It’s a soft, blurred, just-kissed, lived-in matte style that feels effortless.” – Glamour

Sure, Dior Lip Oil had its moment, but those shiny, syrupy lips are officially taking a back seat. Say hello to the Rom-Com Lip: soft, semi-matte textures that practically beg to be kissed. Makeup artist Tanielle Jai, the mastermind behind viral latte makeup, tells Glamour that 2025 is all about the “bitten lip” look. Think Korean and French beauty inspiration—soft, blurred, and like you just shared a kiss on a Parisian park bench. Très chic, indeed.

“I think we’ll be seeing less emphasis on defined lip liner and more of that lived-in matte style,” Jai says. Translation: Perfectly imperfect lips are in. Glossy, high-maintenance looks? Out.

Rom-Com Lip 101

When I hear “Rom-Com,” my brain immediately pulls up the queen of rom-com – Meg Ryan.

Seriously, Sally Albright (When Harry Met Sally) is the OG of this look: natural lips, barely-there color, no liner—pure, unbothered perfection.

So, what are Rom-Com Lips, exactly? Simple:

  • Skip the lip liner.
  • Stick to soft, natural shades (no dark, vampy tones).
  • Add a hint of gloss or balm for dimension.

So yes, while the so-called beauty experts tell us that gloss is out for the Rom-Com lip look, I can’t give up my moisturizer. Thank you. I’m keeping the gloss. I just won’t slather it on.

For me, the Rom-Com isn’t about the blur or “just bitten” look but about a more natural look without the liner to keep it all prim and proper.

This look thrives on customization. Personally, I’ve been rocking it forever. My formula:

A matte lipstick or stain—ideally a shade close to (or lighter than) my natural lip color. I don’t bother with perfect application; smashing my lips together to spread it is my technique. Wet-n-Wild’s white multi-stick in flat or pearl white, dabbed onto the center of my bottom lip, then smudged. A swipe of gloss to finish it off. Boom. Done. It’s fuss-free, forgiving, and wildly flattering. Sure, I occasionally stray into bold-red-lip territory, but Rom-Com Lips are my bread and butter.

The Beauty Industry Wants In
Naturally, the beauty industry is already cashing in. “Lip blurs” are everywhere, promising to simplify the Rom-Com Lip process. Because if there’s one thing beauty brands are exceptional at, it’s spinning TikTok trends into new product categories we never knew we needed. Influencers, take your victory lap.

But let’s keep it real: you don’t need to spend a fortune to nail this look. The Rom-Com Lip is all about doing less and looking good while you’re at it. A trend we can actually get behind? Count me in.
