The Substance Of Demi Moore

Demi Moore At The Golden Globes

Now that Demi Moore has snagged a Golden Globe for The Substance, the question on everyone’s mind is whether she can follow it up with an Oscar. In just 10 short days, on January 17, they will announce the nominations. Will Demi’s name make the cut? And if so, could this finally be her year to take home the Academy Award?

My feelings about Demi have evolved over the years. If I wasn’t a fan at one point, I’ll admit it was probably out of jealousy. Deep down, though, I’ve respected her—especially now, as she continues to thrive with age. At 62, she looks stunning, arguably better than ever. What’s her secret? Likely the classics: good skincare, healthy eating, exercise, and self-care.

But let’s get back on track. I originally sat down to write about a Page Six article that delves into the real story behind Demi’s Golden Globe speech—a speech that exposed the less glamorous, often cutthroat side of Hollywood.

Demi Moore has undeniably carved out an impressive acting career—she’s done a lot. I feel like I grew up alongside her in many ways, even though she’s four years older than me. Some of my personal favorites? Ghost and A Few Good Men are absolute classics. And let’s not forget The Butcher’s Wife, a charming little gem that always makes me smile. Of course, these are just a handful of the many unforgettable roles she’s brought to life.

Then, like many women in Hollywood, she took a step back to focus on raising her daughters—a choice that, unfortunately, often comes with a professional price tag. When she was ready to return, the familiar story played out: women of a certain age in Hollywood face an uphill battle when it comes to finding work.

Hollywood

I’m no Hollywood insider, but I do follow actresses like Nicole Kidman, Isabella Rossellini, Jodie Foster, Allison Janney, and Michelle Pfeiffer—all of whom are still thriving in the industry. It’s a testament to their talent and resilience, but it also highlights the challenges women face in an industry that often undervalues experience and maturity.

At Sunday’s Globes, host Nikki Glaser called out the bitter truth in Hollywood as she spoke about Moore and fellow nominee Pamela Anderson, 57: “If you’re a woman over 50 in a lead role, they call it a comeback. If you’re a guy over 50 in a lead role, congratulations, you’re about to play Sydney Sweeney’s boyfriend.”

“What Nikki said is absolutely true,” said the Moore friend. “It’s a completely different world for men and women in Hollywood.” – Page Six

I think maybe the women themselves are starting to break this mold. Take some credit because as a fan, I can definitely see the results of your campaigning and dedication to continue to get out there and do the work.

Pamela Anderson

Take a look at Pamela Anderson—she was turning heads at the Golden Globes for her latest film, The Last Showgirl. This role has brought her back into the spotlight, earning her well-deserved recognition and even a nomination for her performance.

Directed by Gia Coppola, The Last Showgirl premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 to critical acclaim. The film, officially released in the United States on January 10, 2025, has been described as a transformative moment for Anderson. Critics have praised her performance, calling it a career-defining role that showcases the depth and emotional range many had not previously associated with her.

A New Outlook

The women I grew up watching on the big screen still thrive in their careers, proving that age brings wisdom and a new kind of allure and appeal. Why shouldn’t it be different for women? We are, after all, made differently and blaze our own trail. Hold your head high in pride for womanhood.

Sidenote: I haven’t yet watched Demi’s movie The Substance. I’ve caught a few promos, and after reading some posts on X about it, I feel like I’ve been adequately warned. It seems like one of those films I’ll need to mentally prepare for before diving in.

Apparently, the film has some pretty gruesome scenes. I also found it odd that Demi won her Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy—what on earth?

I truly appreciate when fresh, original work is created for entertainment. Between The Substance and The Last Showgirl, I’m confident these will be well worth my time.
