The Will Smith Apology – I guess if you want to call it that. Mr. Smith put out a 5-minute video titled, It’s Been a Minute, where he does portray an apology to Chris Rock and his family.
It took him 4 months to work up the apology but nonetheless he put something on video for all of us to see.
In the background, hanging on the wall, is a piece of art and it reads, “The world is sick, love is the cure.” Kind of twisted there, isn’t it Will? But whatever helps you heal.
Right off the bat he admits that he reached out to Chris and that Chris is not ready to talk. And I don’t blame him one bit. If that happened to me, on national television, I would never talk to Will again. Ever.
But, it didn’t happen to me.
Will goes on to say that his “behavior was unacceptable.” Well that’s an understatement. I would have liked to have heard a little more about how he finally came to that conclusion.
He also apologizes to Chris’s mother which I thought was very good. That did soften me up a little bit.
There is a point in the video where he answers a question about whether or not Jada had told him to do something in that infamous moment and he emphatically denies that she did. He does touch on the history he had with Chris though. Which makes me pause and wonder what had gone on with them in the past, working relationhip-wise.
He also apologized to his fellow nominees that night. So this video was not solely dedicated to an apology to Chris.
I think what puts me off about his “apology” is that he says he is trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of himself. Well, you should be ashamed of yourself Will! My God.
You don’t have to stay ashamed of yourself but you should feel shame.
And then at the end of the video he says, “I promise if you hold on we will be able to be friends again.” WTF? Was he saying that to Chris or to all of the rest of us? And he puts it on US to try to hold on and he will decide if we can be friends again?
Uh, yeah. No. Bye Will.
I hope Chris Rock finds peace with the situation if he hasn’t already.
