Pros and cons of wearing wigs. I don’t even know how to begin to break this one down.
About 2 to 3 years ago I started experimenting with wig wearing. Experimenting is a funny word. I should say I started throwing money away on wigs. But that’s not fair either.
While I did spend an exorbitant amount of dollars on wigs, I had fun and learned a lot and found which ones suited me. The price of learning I suppose.
No amount of pouring over wig reviews on YouTube can prepare you for that initial look at yourself in your first wig. I remember thinking, “THAT’S SO MUCH HAIR!!!”
Well, of course it was. After a lifetime of crappy, limp, fine, thinning hair. Of course it was a lot of hair.
Getting over the initial shock of seeing “ALL THAT HAIR” took a long time, like weeks, maybe months. I had to wear my wigs a little at a time, around the house at first. And I tried so many wigs.
I started out buying used wigs from a Facebook group I joined. I found a great wig support group right from the beginning and never once have I been scammed. Knock on wood. But I have heard horror stories, so be careful!
Buying used wigs in the beginning is a good idea. Learning all of the terminology before you purchase your first wig is a good idea. Look up and research words like permatease, smart lace, ear tabs, extended nape, and heat friendly fibers.
Don’t be shy about asking a ton of questions either. If you get in a good support group for hair loss and wig-wearing on Facebook, and ask questions, you will learn a lot.
Also, watch wig reviews on YouTube. Word of warning though, keep in mind that 1) professional lighting may be used, 2) the same wig may not look the same on you, 3) wig reviewer may have styled or altered wig beforehand. These are just a few things to keep in mind when looking at wig reviewer videos. My suggestion would be to watch several wig review videos on the wig you want to purchase.
I did do a blog post a while back about what I wish I knew when I first started wearing wigs. And I can wrap up this post with a summary:
- Find a trusted Facebook group to join for SUPPORT, not necessarily ones that just buy and sell.
- Learn the terminology.
- Only buy from trusted online websites like wigstudi1.com, wigoutlet.com, thewigcompany.com to name a few.
- Watch wig review videos but be cautious.
- Be patient with yourself, it takes time.
- Set a budget, it can get expensive.
- Measure your head to find the right fitting wig.
But let me get back to the original topic of the pros and cons of wearing a wig.
PROS
- Confidence boost – having a full head of hair again can make us feel beautiful.
- Change your look – you can change the style, cut, color ANY TIME.
- There are a lot of styles and brands to choose from.
CONS
- Can become addicting and super expensive.
- Uncomfortable – itchy or hot
- Heat friendly wigs seem to wear down quicker than a regular synthetic wig.
- Maintenance and upkeep and storage.
I think those are the key points I wanted to convey. I hope you found it helpful. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have other questions.
